PHILOSOPHY

The main guiding principle of my design approach is that each project I undertake is unique and must be treated as such. Therefore I try not to adhere to architectural “styles”, but rather let the surrounding environment influence the resulting architectural expression. I call this “environmental fit”. A project on beach community, or in a rural setting present different opportunities and challenges. The resolution of these challenges and opportunities become the “style”.

I also believe in the integration of interior and exterior space, and the relationship of people to the natural environment. Rather than forcing manmade objects into nature I strive to create a symbiosis between the man made and the natural setting, this in turn has the effect of mutual enhancement. This cooperation is especially significant in California where the climate is perfectly suited for this seamless integration.

Geometrical Volumes Light Color

Bringing natural light into an interior space is another essential element that shapes my design criteria. Natural light affects moods and how we feel about the spaces we inhabit. I strive to make abundant natural light a key component of my approach to design. Along with light, the use of color enhances the emotional impact of spaces. I want light and color to work hand in hand to bring magic to any environment.

Lastly I view architecture as the interplay of geometrical volumes. Depending on the project and the settings, this can take a very simple or a complex nature. Balancing this interplay into a cohesive whole is key to bringing harmony to a building environment.

To create a successful environment, all the elements I mentioned above have to work in unison and interdependently, within the framework of the architectural program that sets the criteria of the project.
